Kid's Fun Stuff ~ Vintage Toys Wooden Pickup Sticks Game Mikado Spiel Pickup Sticks are another FUN vintage game that tests your coordination, dexterity and skill! Mikado Spiel is another name for the wooden game of pick-up sticks. To play the game you have to move with dexterity and remove sticks from a pile, without moving any other sticks in that pile. Each person gets a turn creating their pile of sticks, and tries to remove as many as possible. When a stick is "disturbed" the turn is over. The next person gets their turn. Each turn is scored, and the highest score wins the game! Mikado Spiel, or Pickup Sticks appears to have been brought to the USA, from Hungary, in the 1930's. The game got its name from the highest scoring stick, the "Mikado". Mikado, is an archaic term for the Japanese Emperor, so this is a game that involves a very important stick! It would be very difficult to win, if you were not able to use the Mikado stick. Once the Mikado has been picked up, it can be used to remove other sticks from the pile, you see? Some other names that are variations of Pickup Sticks are: Jackstraws, Spellicans, Jonchets, I Ching, and Chien Tung. Pickup Sticks are fun for everybody! |

There are usually 40 sticks and 1 Mikado stick in each game. You may occasionally find 41 or 39 sticks and 1 Mikado. This should not influence the outcome of your game or your Fun. They are round and painted with colorful patterns. The patterns give you the score for that stick. Each game of Pickup Sticks comes with instructions in English, as well as several other languages. These look to be French, Danish, Dutch & German, but don't quote me (I only took French). :-) There are also illustrations to show you how to play the game! Believe me, it is not as easy as it looks! Pickup Sticks can be played by adults, as well as children. Sometimes, kids even have the upper hand, because their fingers are smaller! The wood box is small enough to take anywhere. It will fit inside most jackets and purses, so might also be fun to take along, if you travel. Pickup Sticks are great stocking stuffers, too!
