Merlin~Magicians~Sorcerers Merlin~Wizards The legends, myths, and folklore relating to Merlin, have changed little in the last couple of hundred years. The "original"stories of Merlin seem to go back more than one thousand years. The most famous of these is of course, "The Legend of King Arthur". The earliest known references to "Arthur" are associated with ancient Celtic mythology and so it is perhaps understandable that the name of 'Merlin' was interwoven into Arthurian legend, and reflected the Celtic mystic beliefs and notable deities. There is no "proof" of Merlin's existence, but the stories run far and wide, over many hundreds of years. There is bound to be some truth in one of the stories, somewhere. Merlin is a man of mystery and magic; contradiction and controversy surround his life. Merlin has been said to be a child prophet, a powerful magician, a bard, a sorcerer, a child of the unity between a nun and a daemon, an assistant in the conception of Arthur, an engineer, an advisor to Arthur, "the wild man of the woods", brother of Uther, a lover of Vivienne (the lady of the lake),& much more. It is no wonder that Merlin has become an icon to those that are interested in Magic, Alchemy, Mysticism, & Fantasy, that so many people walking magical & spiritual paths are so interested in this magical legend. |
