Some Henna History
Derived from the leaves of an evergreen shrub, henna contains a natural chemical that interacts with the keratin of the skin and hair to give it an orange-red coloration.
Henna has been used for thousands of years to dye the hair, skin, fabric, beards, animal skins, even finger nails. Some Egyptian mummies show that Pharaohs hair and nails were dyed with henna, when they passed on.
Today, Henna is mostly used for hair care, making temporary tattoos (Mehndi), and for conditioning the fingernails. On the hair, neutral henna is used as a hair conditioner. Neutral henna is also used for conditioning fingernails. Red henna is used for hair dye and for Mehndi tattooing (henna tattoos).
What Is Mehndi?
(Or Mehendi)
Mehndi is the art of applying Henna on the body, as a beautiful form of temporary body decoration. Mehndi, has been a part of cultural traditions in India, North Africa and the Middle East for centuries. An Indian ritual dating back centuries, Mehndi tattoos are traditionally painted on the hands and feet of brides to ward off evil, to bring luck and fertility. Mehndi tattoos are also used by men, in some ceremonial rituals.
Here, in the USA, Mehndi is a form of temporary tattoo, available in kits with stencils or in tubes of henna paste. Mehndi allows one to tattoo the body, but not mark it permanently, as in traditional tattooing.
